Intellectual Property Notice

The following belong to Caseo, Inc. or its licensors:

• The Caseo™ name and logo, and the mouse mark.
• The cheese database — the selection, arrangement, verification and structuring of several hundred cheese entries, their alternative names, families, milk types, textures, flavour axes and nutrition figures. Individual facts about a cheese are not ours; the compiled, checked and structured database is.
• The pairing corpus — the pairing relationships and, in particular, the written explanations of why each pairing works. These were researched and written specifically for Caseo and are original literary work.
• Editorial writing — cheese profiles, guides, recipe writing and Rind articles.
• Generated and commissioned photography — see below.
• The design system — the visual identity, typography, colour system and interface design.

In the EU and UK, the database is additionally protected by sui generis database right arising from the substantial investment in obtaining and verifying its contents.

You are welcome to:

• use Caseo personally, and screenshot or share what you find;
• quote a short passage with attribution and a link;
• link to any Caseo page;
• use Caseo’s share cards as we generate them.

Without a written agreement:

• copy, scrape, crawl or bulk-extract the cheese database, the pairing corpus or our imagery;
• republish our editorial writing, in whole or in substantial part;
• use Caseo’s content or outputs to train a machine-learning model — this is expressly reserved and, in the EU, is an explicit reservation of rights under Article 4(3) of Directive (EU) 2019/790 for text and data mining;
• resell or redistribute Caseo data, including as part of a product or dataset;
• use the Caseo name or logo to suggest partnership, sponsorship or endorsement.

Business subscribers get defined usage rights under their subscription agreement. For that, or for any wider licensing, email hello@caseo.app.

Most photographs of cheese in Caseo are generated with artificial intelligence. They are produced to a documented house style, and every new image is checked against a written accuracy rule before it publishes. How and why is explained at How Caseo Uses AI, and generated images carry a mark.

Copyright in AI-generated images is unsettled and differs by country. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s position is that purely machine-generated material is not protected by copyright, though human authorship in selection, arrangement and editing may be. We do not claim more than we have. What we do assert:

• our rights in the compilation and arrangement of the image set;
• our rights in the human contribution — the art direction, the house style, the selection and the editing;
• our rights in the images under OpenAI’s Terms of Use, which assign to the user all of OpenAI’s right, title and interest in output, to the extent permitted by law;
• our rights in all commissioned and licensed photography, and in the design around the images.

Even where copyright may be thin, scraping our imagery still breaches these terms and, in the EU and UK, may infringe database right.

Cheese names, protected designations (PDO, PGI, AOP, DOP, STG), regional marks, consortium logos and producer trademarks belong to their owners and regulatory bodies. Caseo uses them descriptively, to tell you what a cheese is, which is a nominative fair use. We do not certify, endorse or represent any of them, and their appearance in Caseo is not a claim of affiliation.

If you are a producer, consortium or regulatory body and Caseo has described your product wrongly, tell us and we will fix it — that is a correction, not a legal dispute, and we would rather have the accurate version. Reach us at hello@caseo.app.

You own what you post. The licence you give Caseo to display it is in §4 of the Terms of Service, and it is narrow: host, display and promote within the Service.

We do not sell your photographs, we do not license them to third parties, and we do not use them to train models.
